The Aluminum Group

anthony gudwien When "Plano," which was recorded by Dave Trumfio at the original Kingsize Sound Labs on Western Ave. in Chicago, was first released, I could not believe how good it was. Decades later, with Trumfio at the helm in sunny L.A. (yet many "Chicago" musicians are still playing), they did it again. If there was any justice in this world (and, alas, there's not), the Navin brothers would be as popular as The Killers or, at least, Real Estate. Frequently, greatness goes unrecognized. Wonderful record! Favorite track: Color My Lips Hot Pink.

thekingofcandlesticks What's not to love? After 14 years the brothers Navin show up to the party refreshed and ready. It sounds like they never left. This could be their best work yet, I'll have to listen to it another 200 times to be sure.

charles-7 After a long period without an album the Aluminum Group is back. The Heady voice of John Navin associated with his brother Frank always work wonders. A tangy pop, beautiful melodies, the record of spring!
Favorite track: Drag Yourself

A Spark, a break, a new kind of invention You get lost in your own conversations  That dissolves inside your mouth   You flip, you fly, did I forget to mention You get lost in your own interventions  And I see where it’s going So, I know where I’m going now   You better not drag yourself into town You better not muscle in Or push your weight around Don’t even think about setting up shop here Don’t even think about calling this home    You flip, you fly, through the intersection You are charmed by your own acceleration And you clip the man, holding up a cardboard sign Why bother, why bother at all Why bother, why bother at all   You better not drag yourself into town You better not muscle in Or push your weight around Don’t even think about setting up shop here Don’t even think about calling this home

Gertrude said paint a picture in the morning hours Go paint another one in the afternoon Drag queens, as a rule, are worse than children Getting dressed for school— Matinees? Times by two All a mess, then fabulous   Sigmund fled, “something in German”* Same decor appeared in old Hampstead— Oriental rug as day bed Lucien, it is known, will make you sit  Until the cows come home Is a stickler when it comes to pose A dental clamp that just won’t close   Here he sits for the first  He says, of the portraits Smoking cigarette after cigarette In his glory and fabulous   “Color my lips hot pink Paint my eyes a million miles away Paint my face in yellow, blue and gray— But color my lips hot pink Color my lips hot pink”   *sorry, shop closed

The Rock 03:58
She spent a long time waiting in the check-out lane of the Big Mart Only to catch every traffic light She’s got to get home and make sure everything is all right Tonight, the neighbors will be coming around   Park the car in front and bring everything into the backyard Set up the nylon chairs and lights She pretty’s herself up and then she brings herself down And she opens up the door to the backyard And the neighbors start coming around   They make such a fine little couple You can be the one you want  But you never feel the trouble Because they’ve got a way  Of making you feel right at home   I don’t need you to be my rock If you’re gunning for my head  I’m as high as a balloon In a bulletproof vest   The music turns up and the people come around The best little party in this side of town It’s a perfect night for a perfect night The beers come out and the cooler melts down  In the full moonlight of the backyard And all the neighbors start dancing around   She’s pleasant and she’s polite But sitting in the chair she’s feeling resigned  Because last night he tried to cut her hair with a knife    I don’t need you to be my rock If you’re gunning for my head  I’m as high as a balloon In a bulletproof vest

You had your best suit on and modified I had myself airbrushed and colorized in chrome We got our best sides in digital And the rest they got on Kodachrome If this develops into something more Then maybe we’ll be leaving alone   You make small talk sound like world affairs A Baccarat from paper cup I’m so in love I’m so in love I can’t get up   The way that talk gets around is criminal The water cooler feigns a heart attack  So, I write my number on the back of an office pad When I put it down, you’ll pick it up We’ll slip out at separate times, in separate cars And no one will know that we left   I’ll tell the doorman to let you in You tell him where your car is parked You can sleep on the davenport So, you don’t wake when I get up Three is the best time Three is the best time to come around   Will you be coming like you said you are? Or will I be burned like Joan of Arc? I’m cool as water as I wait for you But inside I burn like Joan of Arc 3 is the best time 3 is the best time to come around

Condo #9 03:30
Condo #9 Condo #9 Condo #9  He had long since died Opening drawers, we found knives And ordinary things   He was someone, someone would say was handsome - not me I could care less, care less if someone’s handsome He was someone, someone would say was handsome - not me I could care less, care less if someone’s handsome   Orinda almost hers  Four walls and it was fine A barn-like design Queens whose greyhounds had peed on Every single tile   She was someone, super-graphically challenged - to do Women’s bathrooms, red hearts, and female signs She was someone, super-graphically challenged - to do Women’s bathrooms, red hearts, and female signs   “Poor Room—There Is No Time, No End,  No Today, No Yesterday, No Tomorrow,  Only the Forever, And Forever,  And Forever without End”  (Ivan Le Lorraine Albright, 1942-1943, 1948-1955, 1957-1963)

The Bait 03:17
You were unsurprised by the aftermath As they came in and they took your things Like a hologram being carpet-bombed You just sat there and you took it in While I flinched like a bird  Getting my neck snapped on live TV     You took the bait and now you're gone They charmed you out Hook, line, and sinker You took the bait and now you're gone What a surprise   You were underwhelmed by the consequence  Of the lack of just fitting in You had auto-tuned your apologies Still, the questions keep coming in And meanwhile, all I hear is the clapping on live TV   You took the bait and now you're gone He charmed you out Hook, line, and sinker You took the bait and now you're gone What a surprise   You made the bed you’re lying on You made the bed you’re lying on They're lying with you You made the bed you’re lying on What a surprise

The Beauty and the Beatnik Closing up the town the night before Now the taxi’s coming to take you home    The night seemed so right When you’re two of a kind And one little kind word gets out The night ended soft, and the day came in hard Like Karen Black, in a film by Godard Breathless and wild   The Beauty and the Beatnik Closing up the town the night before Now the taxi’s coming to take you home  The Beauty on the porch step The Beatnik on the living room floor They’ve been tripping all the lights the night before Things look better in the daylight They’ll get better than the night before  Now the taxi’s waiting to take you home   It’s easy and it’s fun Like a two-seater car That runs out of gas Just in time for sunset The apartment is bare But the radio’s on Playing Sam Cooke, and The Aislers Set I never want to wake again  You had to be that wonder girl But I couldn’t rest until I was sure   The Beauty on the porch step The Beatnik on the living room floor They’ve been tripping all the lights the night before Things look better in the daylight They’ll get better than the night before  Now the taxi’s waiting to take you home

It’s been a long time now it’s over He’s turned the corner now he’s gone I watched you pine away  Twenty-four hours a day (yeah, yeah)   All those nights we stayed up talking You’d talk him up so I’d talk you down Off that little ledge With that crush still in your head   Your voice was clear as a bell  But you never opened your mouth You can ring the city but he is out of town  Why didn’t you open your mouth   It’s a hard thing to get over A quiet love you’ve loved so long Those things you should have said Just whirling in your head, yeah   Your voice was clear as a bell  But you never opened your mouth You can ring the city, but he is out of town  Why didn’t you open your mouth   Your voice was clear as a bell But you didn’t open your mouth You can ring the city, but he’s out of town Why didn’t you open your mouth

Had enough of nights And all that they require Back on the bed and eyes on the ceiling They pace themselves and dart themselves back again As we try to work these little things out That don’t even need any working out    Can we ever loosen the knot How’d we get it on so tight The best things last forever  So, it’s no use in just cutting it off   Can we just loosen the knot How did it get on so tight The best things last forever So why can’t we just cut it out   Why can’t we just turn around And end this just as friends Why can’t it be the way you want And the way I want Cuz it’s so much more than this Still, we try to work those little things out That don’t even need any working out Can we just , just can we loosen the knot? Can we just , just can we loosen the knot ? Can we just , just can we loosen the knot How’d we get it on so tight? Why can’t we just open our eyes And look toward tomorrow We’ve gone from being dead to alive Untied the pain and loosen the sorrow Can we just , just can we loosen the knot? Can we just , just can we loosen the knot ? Can we just , just can we loosen the knot Cuz you know we get it on so tight?

Love, never once looked back Love, never once looked back He laid himself down for a little nap A feather pillow on an iron track   Love was hit by a train Love was hit by a train   Love, laid out on a mat Love, stretched out on a mat  Plumes of white feathers as the train went off its track They called the ambulance, but it was too late for that   Love was hit by a train Love was hit by a train Love was hit by a train Love was hit by a train Love was hit by a train Love was hit by a train
